what to do with my 22 yr. old mare with heaves?
i can't take care of her anymore and don't want her to go for slaughter because of her condition. the heaves are easily managed, and i will ensure she finds the best home, but who do you think would want her? an equine assisted therapy facility or maybe she could be used as a babysitter? tell me what you think. thanks. she's not suffering! she has the human equivalent of asthma!!

- put it to sleep
- there are lots of websites you can put her on and I'm sure you will get a response I'm buying a morgan off the web tonight
- Put her ad up at your local feed dealer. Make sure you tell them everything about her.
- Call a few horse or equine rescue facilities. You may have to give them a couple hundred dollars for a complete medical examination, but if you can't care for her anymore, then this would be a great option. They can find a place for her that would suit her best.
- maybe a retirement facility, but make sure she is not suffering with her condition. do not make euthanizing your first choice yet.
- You may want to think about donating her to an equine vet college. She could get the best of care, the students can learn about treating an older horse with heaves, and if she does have to be put down at a later date, then it will be done under a vet's supervision and very humanely. And you can always go and visit her. Good Luck!
