Anyone know if you can use Spelt hay for horses or pregnant horses?
A friend of the family's has acres of Spelt Hay for sale. She is willing to sell it to our therapy center for a few dollars a bale, but most of our mares are pregnant and no one seems to know if Spelt hay is okay for horses. With the price of hay sky-rocketing here if Virginia, it would be nice to get a couple of hundred bales. However, if the hay is possibly lethal to the unborn fetus, then it's a no brainer. I hope you all can help. Linda CannonRidge Therapeutic Riding Center

- Call the vet or your country agricultural agent.
- I am a horse person, have been all my life, and I don't recall ever hearing of Spelt hay being fed to horses... I can't seem to find any info on it on line either. That said the only thing I can recommend is that you call your vet... I do know that changing a pregnant mares diet is something that should be done very gradually and the decision to do so shouldn't be taken lightly. Good luck!!
- ive never heard of it
- What is Spelt hay ? Is it a local term that describes fescue ? Because if it is fescue I would not feed that to a pregnant mare because of the endophyte toxin that could cause abortion. Let me know what Spelt is and I can give you a better answer.
