Clothes to wear for a horse show?

I'm a 4-H member and just getting started in horses. I'm going to be in a western pleasure and halter class this fall and I have no idea what to wear. I don't like the gaudy, rhinestone encrusted outfits that I've seen so far. I want to wear more subdued colors, black preferred. I think blazers over a mock turtle neck look very professional, but would it look ridiculous on a teen girl? I don't want to spend more than $100. I'll also need a hat to go with it, but I'll already have brown and black boots. The shows will be in a small county fair in Ohio. Can anyone give me links or stores in Ohio?

  1. make sure that you read the rule book for guide lines regarding what is leagal for your county. I have found that you can find a nice suit or blazer in any department store check the clearence racks and then you can dress it up with a bright shirt underneath or add a touch of rhinestones yourself to add a little sparkle that suits your taste. It is also important to remember that wearing black and dark colors is going to be very hot in the summer so take that into consideration when picking fabrics.
  2. A blazer would be wrong because blazers and turtlenecks and showshirts are all worn in English Classes. Since you're doing western I would maybe just do a black turtleneck if you want something simple...but western is all about flash and speed and agility
  3. okay...i ride horse too and last year was my frist horse show. I ride english and it was a small show at the fair also. I am a teenager and def. a blazer would not lok ridiculous. I went to the show in a white collared shirt, tan horse back riding pants, black boots, and ablack blazer. It was hot that day so i took the blazer off and stuck my number to the back of my shirt. My outfit was way under $100! I dont know if they have a JC Penny in Ohio but that is wear i got my collared shirt.( which was only like $10-$15) i had got the rest of my outfit at a tack shop near by. But overall i think i might of spent $75 which is not bad at all for a show! ______________________________________ I hope you you get the blue ribbon! 4. Check if their are any regulations, but if the dress is casual, wear a nice button up shirt (wrangler makes nice western ones) and a pair of western jeans (20X, wranglers, cruel girl, rockies, etc.) or show pants. Look on rods.com for hats. Good Luck at your show, I hope I helped! ***~Turn n' Burn~***
  5. well most 4-H shows only let you were black wranglers and a white shirt. but what you can do is go to hobby horse on the enternet and you could get a black slinky and the slinkys are not really that gauddy?
  6. I think that you should wear a long-sleeved shirt w/ a collar and black ranglers(they are the most cozy) maybe some shiiny black boots.
  7. EXACT same sit. here. did you know that you have to have chaps? maybe not yours but ours we do. good ones are $300 dollars. im getting a "slinky". go to www.hobbyhorseinc.com and it will tell you what goes good with your horse's color, and what to wear in what class!!
  8. In this county the 4H'ers have to wear white pants and a white long-sleeved button up shirt. How boring. Plus, white with horses? Look in your rule book and see if your shirt needs to be button up or whatever. You can find most stuff on Ebay.
  9. a good place to get cheep stuff? sstack.com
  10. u want the judge to notice u! who cares if u look like a dork in all the glitzy crap...everyone else looks like one too.(and tht's not saying tht u will) it doesnt have to be a lotta glitz but u dont want ALL black (tht wood b too hott anyways). wat i do is just wear a black slinky and black pants and then a sparkly (colorful) vest over the slinky (and im not a girly girl so its not like im a huge fan of the sparkles but it gets the judges eye) tht way its a little cooler than wearing like a turtleneck under a blazer. u could even just wear a vest over ur turtlneck, it doesnt have to be a special slinky. plus, then all u have to do (if u want) is switch vests and u have a whole new look. so like i have a vest for halter and a vest for pleasure.(or u can wear the same one in every class) and black goes with everything and will make ur vest pop. plus pretty much everything comes in black. and u can just get a vest at like a retail store and glitz it up w/ stuff from craft stores so tht u dont have to spend over $100 if u want. o and as for a hat...i recommend a felt one (tht's wat someone recommended to me) and be shur it matches ur halter outfit.(another way black comes in handy...get a black one and it will always match...if u use my other suggestions)...anyways those are just some things to do where i live but i live in IN so im prolly not terribly far from u and idk how much diff it is there but just check ur rulebook. sry if this didnt help and was a big waste of time for u to read lol.
  11. If you are going to show you need to make sure you presentation is good, wear an outfit that looks sharp, is similar to what others are wearing and shows that you put effort into your presentation. Where I am from, 4-H can be very competitive, and wearing jeans and no chaps is very innapropriate. Most of the people that do 4-H in my county are fairly serious about showing, and wear outfits similar to ones on the quarter horse ciricut, just somewhat toned down. You should go watch some open shows in your area, and see what others are wearing. If you want to go simple, wear black or tan chaps, with a simple slinky like the ones sold on hobbyhorseinc.com. Make sure your hat matches your outfit, and is in good shape. Don't buy a "costume" hat, invest in a nice, well shaped felt hat. Don't go in wearing jeans and a button up shirt, or something like that unless that is the standered in your county. It shows you aren't very serious, and you will be overlooked by the judges. Even if you feel silly in the outfit, everyone else looks the same as you, don't worry about it. Just go in there in something that wont get your hard work over looked, a few sparkles are worth having your efforts with your horse rewarded. something like these: http://www.hobbyhorseinc.com/07_shopping/tunic/1728_allure.shtml or this: http://www.hobbyhorseinc.com/06_broken_heart/3514_hope.shtml would look low key, instyle, and sharp. You can find good deals on these shirts on ebay. For showmanship/halter a blazer and pants will look fine as long as it fits well, some riding shirts can double as showmanship outfits and look really good too. No matter what you wear you should still have your hair done neatly in a bun or under your hat/helmet, your number trimmed so it dosen't bounce, your horse and clothes should be clean, etc. Even if it is just 4-H if you go in with every detail thought out you will be better off. I think the things that are really important for 4-H showing are the details that dont cost anything, but show you went the extra mile (like having very neat hair, a well matching outfit, and your horse perfectly clean) First impression is everything, go in there looking like you are there to win.
  12. I started showing on a really tight budget, so I know it can be done. First, do alot of looking at horse magazines and websites to see what sort of things you like. Hobby Horse has a color wheel which will give you ideas on colors to match your tone of horse. Once you know what sort of things you want, you'll be able to start your hunt. I think you can go conservative at any age, but there are some problems will all black. First, it will be hot, hot, hot, especially if you show outside in the summer (I've been there, trust me!) Secondly, from a distance black is boring to the judge, especially if you're riding a common colored horse such as a sorrel or bay. There may be 5 people on sorrel horses wearing black clothes in the ring, you don't want the judge to struggle remembering which one you are. You do NOT have to go glitzy to stand out. Perhaps go with black but use a colored vest, or a colored blazer. Or if you want most of yourself to remain black, then get a bright slinky for under the blazer. I have done very well shopping at non-horsey places for blazers and slim fitting turtlenecks (to wear in place of a slinky) You can even have luck at second hand stores or places such as Winners. For pants you can wear either dress pants or colored blue jeans, I would avoid the actual BLUE jeans as they look very unprofessional, even at a 4-H level. Black jeans are much better. You don't need to spend a million on a cowboy hat, but it must bit you well and the brim can't be too enormous. It can be tough for a teenage girl to find a hat that isn't huge on her face, so try on several. I would go with a plain black felt hat, but you can also wear straw hats, and cream felt hats (although the cream gets dirty very easy) Some places still use gloves alot for showing, in other areas they are out of style. You can always buy a lightweight pair for $10 and bring them with you. I own a plain black wool saddle pad, this pad goes with several different outfits and will last almost forever as I use an underpad to protect my good show pad. Good luck and have fun. Remember to keep the rest of yourself tidy, your hair should be pulled back from your face and contained with either a hair net, bun or ponytail so it doesn't bounce or cover your number.
