How do you get rid of large amounts of horse manure without paying a lot of money?

We live on 2.5 acres with 2 horses. We've been dumping manure mixed with wood shavings into a pile when we clean the stalls. That pile is now gigantic and growing. We put an ad in the paper for free manure, in case people want to come take it for fertilizer, but people aren't exactly racing over for it. Any ideas? We're trying to avoid paying a professional removal service.

  1. stick it in bags on front of your house saying free manure or summat n hope people take it thats what ppl near me do n ppl r always pikin bags of it up!!
  2. One way may be to offer delivery. People may even pay for the delivery. If you lived near me an delivered i'd take it.
  3. Are there any plant nurseries near you? They will take it off your hands no problem!
  4. Horse manure is sort of ruined when mixed with sawdust. But on the positive side, can you put up an ad at your garden center/hardware store? Or contact you local garden club? Do you have any fields you can plow the stuff into?
  5. Contact a local small farmer and see if he wants it for his fields. Also sell it to rose gardeners, it would make a good mulch for around rose plants. Too do this you will have to dry it out and bag it but it should pay for its self. Bag ten or twenty bags and head to your local farmers market to see if they will sell. Also why your there talk to some of the people selling produce and see if they would like to take some off your hands. Market it as organic fertilizer (could be a big selling point).
  6. sell it as fertilizer.(lol)
  7. Many newspapers do not charge for Free items. If you would put an add in the paper, gardeners would fight for what you have and muck your stalls in the future.
  8. the reason that people aren't running over for it is that its not well rotted . . . . it is too acidic for most plants try advertising it as free well rotted manure then that should shift allot more . . . also if it is bagged then that is more attractive to the kind of people who don't like to get their hands dirty . . . . in your add in the paper point out the benefits of using natural products, recycling etc and is there any allotments near you because the men on them will go mad to get it . . . also if you find out what plants love it then put them in as well IE rhubarb apple and pear trees rose bushes that sort of thing . . . (try to avoid the sawdust in it as well because it will put allot of gardeners off). . . . . . .. . . . good luck with this
