Im writing a book about zombies, so whats the largest breed of horse?
Im pretty sure its the Clydesdale, but I need to be certain. Also, whats the gyst of ferrying (or however its spelt)? I know you trim the hooves every six weeks, but is there more? Im not thinking of getting a horse, so dont go 'oh, this horse isnt for beginners, and dont think about ferrying your own horse, you should see a professional', Im writing a book about zombie infestation and the people find a farm and find a couple of whatever the largest horse is and decide to use them. Also, a general description of the horse would be nice, like average hands tall/long and average weight Thanks

- i'm not sure on this but I think it's the asian horses I believe
- I know a bit about ferrying. Sometimes you can reuse the shoes, sometimes they need to be replaced. They can also be lost if the ground is real muddy where the horses tread. They trim the hooves before putting new ones back on.
- Belgian The World's Largest Horse: Purebred Belgian stallion by the name of Brooklyn Supreme. He stood 19.2 hands (6'6") at his withers. He weighed over 3,200 pounds and is entered in the Guiness Book of World Records. He was foaled in 1928 and died in 1948.
- Percherons
- your right the Clydesdale. is the biggest. . from the rive Clyde, in Scotland, Glasgow but the shire horse is big also .
- A Shire. They are heavily muscled and have feathering on their hooves. One of them holds the record for the tallest horse ever recorded. They can get up to 20 hands. Look them up on Google. You're right about trimming the hooves every 6-8 weeks and the ferrier will also file the hooves and will replace the horse shoes as well. Sounds like an interesting book.
- A farrier trims hooves. A ferrier pushes a ferry across water.
- The Percheron is the largest horse in the world. They can be as tall as 24 hands high, and weigh 2,400 pounds. They are easy going, but were used in defense in the Middle Ages. Good luck with your book!
- The largest horse breeds are Belgians and Percherons...both larger than the Clysdedale. I don't know about the weight, but try googling these breeds.
- There are different breeds of horses that can be tall, but it would likely be a draft horse. The current tallest horse in the world is a 19.1 hands Percheron gelding named Goliath. Most horses weigh 1,000-1,500 pounds, but this particular draft weighs 2,500 pounds. So anwhere upwards of 1,500 pounds for the average draft. Draft horse's average heights run upwards of 16 hands (1 hand being 4 inches), to the greatest of 19 hands. And farriers (that's how it's spelt) are the caretakers of horses hooves. They typically trim the hooves every 6 to 8 weeks, to keep them from becoming overgrown and damaged. They also shoe the horses. The number of shoes depends on the animal. For the most part, ponies wear no shoes because they have tougher hooves. Some horses wear shoes on all four hooves because they have hoof problems or they just have weak feet. Some have 2 shoes because their back hooves are strong, but need some support on the front. A horse carries up to 70% of its weight on it's front legs. And some horses need no shoes. It all just depends on the horse, but I think it would be safe to assume that the draft breeds need all 4 shoes, because they are so heavy.
- The Shire is the largest – and among the oldest – of the British horse breeds. Among its ancestors were the chariot horses of the Britons – described and admired greatly by Julius Caesar two thousand years ago. For centuries its primary role was as a War Horse (its original name). It has also been known as the Great Horse and the Strong Horse. A mature stallion can stand up to 18 hands (1.83 metres) high and weigh up to 1000 kilograms, with mares and geldings generally being less massive.
- Most draft horses are pretty big, tall AND beefy. Throughout the years, different breeds have held the record, the Clydesdale, the Shire, the Percheron and the Belgian have all held the Guinness World book record, all topping out at over 19 hh. However, on average, all 4 breeds tend to run anywhere from 16 hh to 18 hh on average and weigh 1400 to 2000 lbs, so think about what you want your big horse to do. All drafts are pretty mellow, and are called cold blood breeds because their muscles are a slower twitch type muscle, as opposed to a warm blood (Quarterhorse, various European breeds, and various draft crosses) or hot blood (Arabian, Andalusian) that has a faster muscle twitch response. It's sort of like the difference between a heavy duty pick up and a Ferrari, LOL! One's torqued for power, the other speed. My half drafts are very gentle, and not prone to spooking. Clydesdales and Shires at one time shared a lot of ancestors. They look a lot alike, and have beautiful feathers on their lower legs. They come in black or red with white trim on their legs and faces. Belgians are red, but will have flaxen manes and tails, very pretty, but their feet aren't as hairy. Percherons come in black or grey (white) and are not supposed to have any white trim at all. Also, they do not have feathery feet. Percherons also have more Arabian blood, and are the liveliest of the drafts. Another three beautiful breeds to consider are the Gypsy Vanner, big, feathery with heavy mane and tail and a pinto color pattern; the Friesian, coal black also with lots of hair, (they are not draft horses, but are big beefy horses, and very flashy!) and Sugarbush drafts, which a basically Percherons colored like Appaloosas. And that's just what we have in America! There's tons more (pun intended, LOL!) in other countries!!! Have Fun!
- techniclly their is no biggest BREED , however their is bigger breeds than other, i can not say any one breed but you could narrow it down to a few, like hanoverians , my hanoverian is 18 hands 3 inches, he is the biggest hanoverian ive heard of yet, but you could also say, belgians ,their huge, clydsdales, shires, most of the heavy horses really, thoroughbreds can get really big too, but then again there is lots of big BREEDS
- Draft breeds are the largest, the four major breeds being Shire, Percheron, Belgian and Clydesdale. Not all drafts need shoes, my Perch worked on a plow until he was ten and never wore a shoe in his life. The farrier comes every 6 weeks or so and trims his hooves, it takes less than an hour for all four feet. The farrier used a clipper to do this (Google "farrier tools" in images). He also takes a file to the edges of the hoof to even it. Hope I helped, if you need me message :)
- lol arabians are i think.... have fun with your book
- Clydesdales' height averages overlap the Shires'. But the Clydesdales' is the winner. their was this one Clydesdale that grew up tp be 21.1 hands high. And a Percheon cannot be 24 hands high, tho it can, possibly, weigh 2400 lbs. tho, it might be a little over weight.
- What the hell does horse have to do with you writing a book about zombies?
- The largest horse is either the Clydesdale or the Shire. Different people have different opinions but I say the Shire. When the farrier comes every 6 weeks, they normally just trim the hooves, but some people get their horses shoed. It depends on what the horse is used for and the environment it lives in. The height of horses varies, but the average is from 15 hh to 16hh; weight is around 1200lbs
