- It seems like the four-year-old might have been a bad choice for you (and saddlebreds aren't the calmest horses in the world, either). If you can't train it yourself, you need to be able to afford professional training by someone knowledgeable. Some words of wisdom: the cheapest part of owning a horse is buying it. Monthly upkeep, even excluding training, is very expensive. Between farrier work, vetting, teeth floating, feeding, bedding, blankets, grooming supplies, and with the continual increase in hay costs... Not to mention the accidents that horses are prone to... It's not cheap. I don't know your background or experience with horses, but I'd say it'd definitely be a wiser idea to just lease a horse than own.
- I would ask around at the local large animal veterinarian clinics, they might be able to recommend a good one. Tack shops might have something on their bulletin board too. You will pay for the good trainers, but explain your situation and maybe you could trade hay or something to knock down their fee. I would price around, because with today's horse market, you might be able to find an older well broke horse pretty cheap. Trust me on that one, I've bought the better looking ones instead of the better minded ones too many times and have the mended bones to prove it. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
