can horses see in the dark like dogs and cats can?
I was wondering if horses can see in the dark like cats and dogs can. The thought came to me last night when I was in a show and the ring went pitch black dark. I know in that situation it really wouldn't matter because of the sudden change, but I still wondered in normal circumstances if they could.

- I think they can...
- i don't think so
- Horses do pretty well visually especially after sunset. http://www.equisearch.com/horses_care/health/anatomy/nightvision_091003/
- Yes they can see in the dark well...but not quiet as good as cat and dogs can.
- they definately can, but i;m not sure as well as dogs. I found this out because during a storm ( just rain) the lights went out while riding, and my mare still cleared the jump- the one i didn't even see! It depends from horse to horse, but that is how the night-strap or bucking-strap came about When the cowboys would have to ride fast at night, they would let the horse have the reins and hold on to the strap on the front of the pommel/saddle horn. that way the horse could see easier.
- yeah but i don't think it is good for them
- yes they can but the way that you can really tell is if you take there picture at night and there eyes glow like deers which they do but any animal that has eyes that glow like a deers then they can see really good in the dark.
- Horses can see better in low light that Dogs and Cats. Look at the size of their eyes, Much more surface area in the part of the eye that receives the light. Sort of like how a small sensor digital camera does not work as well in low light as the professional full frame digital camera sensors. Also, horses see in color (although a blurry image) whereas dogs (I don't know about cats) see in monochromatic tones.
