How to grow out a horses tail?
I have a year old Paint Horse. She had been going out in the pasture with another yearling and then her pasture mate chewed off her tail. And not just a little bit....alot. I've been using Mane N Tail Conditioner but it takes forever to work. And theres not enough tail left to put it in a braid or to tie a tail bag in. She used to have a gorgeous long thick tail. Is there anyway to grow it back out? I know some horses that had they're tails chewed off years ago and they never grew back out fully. Is that whats going to happen to my horse?? Or is there some way to grow it back out? Thanks in advance.

- Nutritional supplements like vitamins and keep up with the Mane N Tail. It will take a while for this to work. Plus keep it trimmed and brushed, this will ensure that it grows out nicely and not jagged and torn up looking. Also, when it starts to grow especially if she's still in with the yearling is to put it up in a "bun" this will keep the temptation away from the little one. It will take a while so remember that . . . ~good luck~
- I would keep using the "mane-n-tail" conditioner, I would also brush it at least 3 times a week. you need to stimulate the skin for hair growth.
- United Vet Equine sells 3 really good coat and hair products. Healthy Coat Super Coat 17 Omega's http://www.unitedvetequine.com
- Believe it or not I use Dawn's laundry softener. I have been using it for a week and my horse's tail has grown over 2 inches and it has become thicker! This was recommended to me by my horse trainer. I fill a 5 gallon bucket full of water and then put a lid full of the Dawn's sofener in the bucket. Then I mix it together and soak his tail for a few minutes. It really works!
- Shapley's makes a product called M.T.G (Mane Tail Grow)...you rub it in just like a leave in conditioner on the roots. Also try using a mixture of Rose Oil & Show Sheen when you are brushing her tail out. The Rose Oil promotes healthy roots & folicals in the hair & the show sheen keeps the hair untangled & easily brushed out to avoid pulling any more hair out do to knots. If you are going to continue to turn her out with the pasture mate that is eating her tail, you may want to consider vet wrapping her tail up or using one of those cloth tail pouches. Just make sure that if you are doing this in the spring & summer time you compensate her not having a tail to swat the flies with lots of fly spray & even a fly sheet. I put all of my show horses tails up when they are outside. Good Luck!
- There is a product made to spray on the tail to keep other horses/foals from chewing on it. I cannot remember the name right off, Ill look it up and get back. As for getting it to grow back, ive had good luck with baby oil and lots of brushing. The brushing will stimulate the growth and the oil, will help making the hair shaft soft and weighs it down some, which will help the growth some. If you can wrap the tail at all, it would help. You can try a mixure of cayenne pepper and water. And I have heard white vinegar, which also helps repels flies, by the way. Be back with product name shortly. Grannick's Bitter Apple Bitter Apple is a non-toxic, safe and effective chew deterrent. Has a bitter taste to discourage pets from licking, gnawing and chewing on surfaces where applied. Stops pets from biting and chewing fur, wounds and bandages. http://www.petedge.com/ is one place you can find it. This is NON TOXIC. Ive seen people use motor oil and other stuff that I know I would not want my horse eating!! Be careful not to use anything that will damage the tail further. Best of luck.
- MTG (Mane Tail Groom) I have found works wonders. It is really oily and smells funny, but it works. And it will help with the other horses trying to chew on her tail too cause its got a really strong smell and I am sure it tastes bad! If you can apply it daily and massage it in on her tail bone. Also you may try a feed through supplement that will help with the hair growth. I
