Horses...........? Now i'm fine with horses playing around in the field/stables, and I have nothing against horses - it's just the owners/riders. When people decide to ride their horse on the roads they hold up traffic for miles and the horse sh!ts all over the road!! Plus there's always the risk that it's gonna go mental and jump on your bonnet or something like that. Is it just me or do you agree that if they want to ride on the road then the horse riders should pay some kind of tax and pick up all the sh!t - car drivers have to pay car tax, so why shouldn't they?!?!?! I don't care how long horses have been around.........roads are built for cars!! (yes they wee originally for horse and cart or whatever - but i'm talking about the mordern road). "They shoudn't pay tax because they'd prefer the roads to go back to being fields"................They can't prefer anything - they don't have a choice - it's a d^mn horse, humans are in charge! And how can you say they don't hold up traffic when they obviously do - you cant just pass a horse with another car coming at you - they take up too much of the lane - and if drivers are supposed to stay wide and clear of them, then you absolutely have to go in the other lane dont you!! "And finally, most horseriders already pay car tax"............well I have two cars - I still have to tax both!! I DON'T CARE about horse insurance.....horse insurance doesn't go toward costs of roads etc does it!!! SHEILA..........a few things about that....... Horse Crap fertilises tarmac does it?!!! Who says I don't slow down?! - I don't want a big dent in my bonnet so i'm not gonna provoke it am I. The roads are paid for by people who pay car tax, like they should be buy people who want to ride horses on them. Lastly, im English. Why do people keep saying about pedestrians........?? Pedestrians walk on the pavement not in the road!! And cyclists, they're annoying too - but not half as much as horses. 'Horses'............ Dogs were here before cars - but we don't allow people to walk them down the road do we - they stay on the pavement! 'Nokhada'.........That would just be stupid - you're being stupid!......Those that want to ride on the road have to pay a tax - it's valid for however long specified for as many horses as you desire (riding one at a time i.e. one lot of tax doesn't cover a group of 3 people out riding), then you get a wallet sized card to fit in your wallet that you must carry with you when riding - as you would get a tax disc for your car...........or you could get a tax disc and attach it to the eye deflector things that they wear (no i dont care for there official name). SIMPLE!!!!!!
horses?>???? who likes horses whats your favorite type of horse
Horse Management- How did you get into horses and where did you learn the necessities? A lot of people get into the horse business or horse ownership as a "family" thing. The generations before them had horses, and now they too own horses. I'm sure most of their knowledge comes from learning by hand. But some other people (like myself) do not get this opportunity. My grandparents owned horses, but my parents did not. So that "hands-on" learning that goes on for generations stopped. Right now I'm still in High School but plan on owning a horse or more in the future. I've taken equine science/management classes, and work with large animals like cattle (not that their care is alike!). And as weird as it sounds- I think I am going too far with learning and reasearch. So have you horse owners learned what you know from childhood, learned about the subject then got into horses, or just got horses and learned as you go?
What do you wish horse people knew about horses? I hate it when horse people don't even know what color their horse is in horse terms.. Brown is a horse with a black body and brown muzzle... etc. There is a difference between colt and filly.. If your talking about either one is a foal. Colt equals male.. they are not all colts. The truck and trailer doesn't judge the quality of the horse coming out of it. Respect for the people who train their own horse. Just because I ride western doesn't mean I'm a redneck or trash. What are things you wish the horse people out there know about horses!
How do I get my horse to pass by other horses? So I don't have a fenced-in area or room for a fenced-in area at my house, so I ride down dirt roads near my house. There is a small farm near my house that has two horses in the front pasture. My horse can usually go by one way without calling them out or stopping, but on the way back, she calls to them then goes up to the fence and won't turn around to go home. When I ask her to move she usually picks up her front legs and pivots around on her hindquarters. It takes a long time to get her to do what I want her to do and it gets really frustrating.
One of my Horses all has itch skin from flies and insects? I have tried I lot of old horses mens methods. I buy rugs for him but he ripe them in short times. I hate chemical, but try this one chemical stuff on him, it did not work and once I open the bottle of stuff both my horses could smell it, even if I had them in the yard would not let me near them. Anyone on the otherside of the world got any other answers?
How would I go about getting into horses massage therapy? Hi, I am from Australia. I have been thinking about doing a horses massage course and becoming a qualified massge therapist for animals (mainly horses). I am expereinced with horses and alnimals of all kind but cannot find out how to get into a course like this or find workshops anywhere. Any infomation on this would be greatly appreciated.
How do I get cuckleburs off a horses face? This is referring to the horses that I mentioned in my last question. One of the horses has cuckleburs on her face & on her bridle. Can anyone tell me a way to get these off without losing the horses trust?
How to grow out a horses tail that has been chewed off? My horses tail has been recently chewed off by another horse. And not just a little bit. Her tail is basically nonexsistant now. What is best to use to get it to grow back out?? Thankss in advance. Also, shes only a year old. And theres no tail left to braid or to tie a tail bag in. I've been using Mane N Tail Conditioner, but it hasn't been working.
What is the best way to keep a horses hooves from becoming too dry, even with the regular use of hoof oil? We have a little debate in the stable where i work, I say that too much washing and water will gradually make the horses hooves them dry, we should continue to oil the hoof regularly and avoid water as much as possible, but another employee insists that we should wash the horses hooves every day regardless, whether they are dirty or not! She seems to think water will moisten the hooves. I would really like to learn what is right, as I only want the best for the horses and to stop the hooves being so dry. Any suggestions?
Why are horses not supposed to sweat after a flu and tet jab? Just wondering as mine some times go mad around the field if they hear other horses on the road or a hunt passes nearby. Should I leave getting it done until their rugs are off? I don't live beside the field. Also does anybody know why it's bad for them to sweat after the jab?
How can I help 2 certain horses being neglected in my area? Theres a small town with a bad reputation about 20 minutes from where I live, and every time I'm over that way I see these 2 horses in this tiny quarter- or half-acre pasture with barbed wire (i think) on the fence and it makes me sick. They look so skinny and scraggly, and I want to do something about it. I plan on making it a point to drive over and look just a little closer, but what is real cause to call humane society. And if the poor animals were eventually removed from the practically in-town property, would there be a way for me to take one or both horses to my barn and nurture them. Also, are there grants or funding available in helping with this. Anyone with this kind of experience, I would really appreciate some insight and help in figuring this out. I've got 2 horses of my own now, and my first horse died in january, old and skinny, so i know some horses are just skinny. I don't want to cause problems, I just want what's best for the animals. Thanks!
What does it take to earn your horses respect and trust? Ok its a slow night on here, lets get it rolling. There appears to be 2 sides on here in reguards to this question. I have always felt that respect comes from training and building a bond with your horse that way. Then you have the other ones that believe you go out there with a bucket of treats, pet them, kiss them and build respect and trust that way. How do you accomplish this and how many horses have you honestly owned (living breathing ones).
What is the longest you have trailered horses on a road trip? I have a 13 hour trip to Montana to make with 2 horses (we are moving). How long do you think I can drive before having to give them a break? Plus, where do you usually stop to do so? I have searched for websites on horse friendly rest stops and can't find any. Thank you!
What do you pay for shoeing in your area? Anyone in the horse section shoe your own horses? Wondering how much you pay to get your horses shod on all four feet. A friend of mine is going to farrier school in Oklahoma, and I'm wondering how much he's going to make at this job. He has a lot of horse experience, so I know he'll do a nice job. And he lives in Idaho, where everyone who uses their horses must put shoes on them regularly. What does your farrier charge?
What common human foods are bad for horses? I have heard that chocolate is not good for horses, but I was never sure. Are there any other human foods you should watch out for when it comes to horses? Thanks in advance!
How does horse flu exactly affect horses? In Australia / Vic / Melbourne there has been a horse flu scare. But what I would really like to know is what does the flu do to a horse. I understand that the horse develops a temperature. Yes I know horses cant talk so they can't tell us how they are feeling, but what do the experts say about how it affects the infected horse.
What kind of feed can my senior horses eat? I have been feeding my 2 senior horses Nutrena Senior Feed, not the John Lyon signature brand. It is $14.49/bag at my local feed store and i go through 1 to 1 & 1/2 bags a week. It is getting pretty costly. Is there other brands that are just as good for senior horses that won't make them have digestive problems? It also must be able to get wetted down, because I have to make it into a bran mash as they have choke syndrome. The reason I have been using Nutrena Senior so long is because it has rice bran and beet pulp in it, and as far as I know, no other senior feed does that. If it helps in your research, i live in minnesota, so please don't give me a name of something that is only available in massachusetts or whatever state you live in! THanks!
How to keep my horses water tank clean? I am constantly cleaning out my horses buckets and water tanks. I am wondering if there is anything that could help with keeping their water clean (green moss, algae grows) Thanks!
What is the best country in the world for horses, and horse jobs? Canada? USA? United Kingdom? Australia? Ireland? For keeping horses, and getting veterinary jobs? And the most variety of horses, and cheapest supplies? And also the best climate? Thanks everyone! oh, and only people who actually know about horses please, i dont want short pointless anwsers... thanks again!
How are dogs capable of killing horses? Recently on the news, there was talk about a rottweiler that took down, and killed a horse. (Not a pony- a horse) How do dogs do this? The horse is an animal that weighs over 1,000 lbs, and the rottweiler probably weighed 100 lbs. How are dogs capable of killing horses by themself?
What is the best grass to grow for horses? We live on a 77 acre farm and have horses but it the fields are full of weeds and fescue. What are the first steps in making the fields good for horses to eat? Looking for some insight? Get rid of fescue? spray? take soil samples? etc?
How do I get my horses to stop, am I giving them incorrect signals? It takes about 3-4 more steps before my horses stop. I think the fault must be mine. I use the Whoa command and pull back on the reins. I try to plant myself in the saddle and push my legs forward but I am usually only at a walk at the time and not moving much anyway.
My dream is owning horses. Should I live in a apartment or live in a house that has horse property? My dream is owning horses. Should I live in a apratment or live in a house on horse property? I read how much one horse's care would cost a year. (vet bills, farrier, hay for summer and or other seasons, cost of hay per horse, fly spray, wormers, farm fence and barn maintanence, and ect.) But right now I'm not sure what direction I should go in. I understand how much horses cost just to buy. And I also know that someone would need to make a decent living just to take care of themelves, their car (gas and insurance), mortage, water, heating and gas bills. But how much money would I need to make of year to take care of my horse(s), me and my house bills? And what if you are living by yourself? I am not a yard person. I love horses!!
How can I stop hornets going for my horses? It's a really hot summer and the hornets are out in full! They are driving my two horses mad and I wondered if anyone knew of any remedies or effective repellents to stop them bothering the horses.
Can grazing horses increase dock and nettles on pasture? I want to graze my horses on a friends unused field. There is quite a bit of dock and patches of nettles. My horses wil eat the grass but leave the dock and nettles. Will this encourage the weeds to increase?Any info appreciated! Thanks!
How do I get my horses to pick up their feet? I have 2 horses, one is 25 and the other is 20. They haven't been picking up their feet lately. I usually pick out their hooves everday, but now I can barely get a day in out of the week. I will stand there for over 30 minutes trying to make them pick their feet up, but they won't budge. I have even tried putting my weight into them to make them shift their weight. I don't know what to do. Any ideas?
How do they catch loose horses in horseracing? When you see a horserace and a jockey takes a fall but the loose horse keeps on running, how is it caught once the race is over? Do they train horses to come to a handler or do they just wait for the horse to get bored before grabbing it? I'm specificially asking about horseracing in the UK.
Can you help with socializing dogs and horses? I have horses and dogs…soon I will be at a place where my dogs can meet my horses. One of my dogs is a hunter. The other is not very well socialized. I’d like for the four of them (2 dogs, 2 horses) to be able to be around each other. Horse people: Do you have any suggestions? Dog people: Your suggestions, please?
How can i wash out my horses tail when its like 30-50 degrees outside? Its REALLY cold up here and my horses tail is nasty. I have shampoo and anything needed to wash out his tail but its like 45 degrees!! Its way to cold to give him a shower!!! His tail is disgusting and I really wanna make it look nice!!! Can anyone tell me the step by step way to wash out his tail without making him all wet and cold?
How to grow out a horses tail? I have a year old Paint Horse. She had been going out in the pasture with another yearling and then her pasture mate chewed off her tail. And not just a little bit....alot. I've been using Mane N Tail Conditioner but it takes forever to work. And theres not enough tail left to put it in a braid or to tie a tail bag in. She used to have a gorgeous long thick tail. Is there anyway to grow it back out? I know some horses that had they're tails chewed off years ago and they never grew back out fully. Is that whats going to happen to my horse?? Or is there some way to grow it back out? Thanks in advance.
How do I get my horse to SLOW DOWN around other horses? I just got my first horse about 2 months ago. She's been doing really good and I'm planning on showing her this summer. She was always around other horses when she wasn't with me but now she's the only one and because of that we (my family and I) spend a lot of time with her, so she doesn't feel lonely. About a week ago, i attended a "bring your horse and ride in the arena" 4H meeting. I knew that she would be a little nervous but most of these horses were well trained. While riding her, though, she kept drifting toward other horses. When my friend would canter past me, she would atomatically speed up to catch up to her. She cantered past more but she still go the urge to speed up each time. Well, i'm afraid of what she will do this weekend (first show) because even as i was practicing today, she tried to catch up to my brother, who was jogging in front of me. With a horse in front of her in the ring, i'm afraid she'll break into a canter to catch up. HELP! (I'm in Walk-Trot Classes)
What does owning horses have anything to do with taxes? I'm a tax accounting student. There's this one part in the chapter business and hobbies that I find odd: "An activity (that does not involve horses) is profit-seeking if it shows a profit in at least 3 of any 5 consecutive years ending with the taxable year in question." Can someone help me out deciphering this text? It doesn't explain it further in the book. What's up with the horses? Why not cows or sheep? To WayneZ: If people who are in the business of raising and/or selling horses can prove that they can continually have losses, then shouldn't their activity be classified as a hobby instead?
can horses see in the dark like dogs and cats can? I was wondering if horses can see in the dark like cats and dogs can. The thought came to me last night when I was in a show and the ring went pitch black dark. I know in that situation it really wouldn't matter because of the sudden change, but I still wondered in normal circumstances if they could.
How can I become more confident around horses? I really want to start riding lessons and care for horses at the stables but I get really nervous or a bit scared when I'm near them. I think its because im worried about spooking or scaring them and then they might hurt me (even if it's not intentional). How can I become more confident around them when i get so worried?

horses ? does anyone know of a place in oswego new york or closest to there preferably scriba, that offers horseback riding lessons and horse boarding, the last place was relatively cheap at 290 a month for horse boarding and $30 lessons and i bought a horse and i have been going there for about a year but i realized recently that the people there are smokers and if it isnt healthy for a humans lungs it cant be healthy for my cute little horses lungs either. so since i live in scriba i figured i would try to find a place closer to home, i cant have the horse at my house because while i do have 30 acres, my mom is very allergic to horses so i would like a place that i can go to and change clothes before she comes to pick me up you know. thanks for your help.

Two horses.... This joke rocks when u tell it in person? There were two horses on a farm, a big horse and a little horse. There was not much to do, just stadding round in the paddock, so the older horse suggested that they have a race. The little horse was a bit reluctant. He said "No, i dont dont want to race, your too big and you'll win". The big horse replied "ok then, ill give you a head start". The little horse agreed. The little horse ran first, with a 10 metre head start. he ran and ran and ran as fast as he could, but when he reached 30 metres, the big horse overtook him and won the race. The big horse said "Wow, that was fun. lets go again." The little horse was a bit sour about his loss and said "nah, because you'll win again. "ok" said the big horse "ill give you a 40 metre head start", so the little horse agreed. The little horse started with a 40 metre head start. he ran and ran and ran as fast as he could, but when he reached 60 metres, the big horse overtook him and won the race. <continued. hang on a sec while i add it> arrrrrrgh!!!! I typed it out twice now, 1000 words both times. the first time, my baby sister came and pressed the power button on the computer. The second time, the internet dropped out and it "couldnt find the server". Im not typing it all again. The whole point was to drag the joke on with different head start times. at the end, a dog comes up and asks why they r racing and the horses go "oh look, a talking dog". When u say it in person, it takes ages to get it out, and ur freinds r thinking "man, if its taking this long, it better have a good ending". When it ends like that, every1 thinks its a waste of time :P
Dead Horses and South Africa? Dakota Native American tribal wisdom, passed on from generation to generation, says: "When you discover that you are riding a dead horse, the best strategy is to dismount and get a different horse." However, in educative, corporate and governmental Southern Africa, more advanced strategies are often employed, such as: 1. Buying a stronger whip. 2. Changing riders. 3. Appointing a committee to study the horse. 4. Arranging to visit other countries to see how other cultures ride dead horses. 5. Lowering the standards so that the dead horse can be included. 6. Reclassifying the dead horse as 'living impaired'. 7. Hiring outside contractors to ride the dead horse. 8. Harnessing several dead horses together to increase speed. 9. Providing additional funding and / or training to increase dead horse's performance. 10. Doing a productivity study to see if lighter riders would improve the dead horse's performance. 11. Declaring that as the dead horse does not have to be fed, it is less costly, carries lower overheads and therefore contributes substantially more to the bottom line of the economy than do some other horses. 12. Rewriting the expected performance requirements for all horses. And of course ... 13. Promoting the dead horse to a supervisory position! If you understand the above, then you are obviously a South African
