Are there any professional horse breeders out there? Could you help?!? I am planning on getting into breeding well-bred Anglo Arabs. It is something that I would like to do as a future career. I was wondering how you professional horse breeders got started, what made you decide what to breed, why did you decide to breed in the first place, how did you get more knowledge on what your breeding, ect? I want to know everything! Did you talk to professional breeders, get advise from them? Please, only people who have 'been there, done that' answer! Thank you! Also, if you know of any web sites or books, please let me know! Just to give you a little more info to go by, I will not be sending the horses to a trainer. I have broke horses in the past and can do it again! And also, I know the cost involved. I have raised horses for several years now. Thank you to those who have answered!
Does anyone have any ideas on finding sponsorship to help me purchase a horse for professional show jumping? They run 20,000-100,000USD and I have had trouble identifying many sponsorships that support female atheletes in the equestrian arena. I have been fortunate to find olympic caliber trainers but need the horse to make me competitive. Any creative ideas?

Horse trainers: How long would it take to accomplish the following with a smart and willing horse? (English)? Teach him to stand still when mounted. Teach him to stand still on concrete while being groomed. (He likes to walk all over the place.) Teach him to not freak out when he's being sprayed (Show Sheen, fly spray, etc.) Teach him to get on the bit nicely every time. (He CAN do it and does sometimes). Teach him to pick up his feet. (He's willing about 75% of the time and once his feet are up, he stands nicely, but sometimes he flat refuses.) How many hours of training would this horse need and what would you charge to accomplish this? I know there are a lot of variables here, but give me your best estimate. Should a professional horse trainer guarantee her work? Note: We just bought the horse about 3 weeks ago. He's a really good and sweet boy, but he hasn't been ridden or even handled much in about a year. He's getting a lot better at each of these issues as my daughter is working with him. Thanks for all of your answers.
Who is the best professional horse trainer? Why? For ex: Clinton Anderson, Chris Cox, Monty Robert's, Parelli....etc
What to expect for first-time horse riding lessons? I'm starting riding lessons shortly after the October long weekend from a well-known friend of mine. He is a professional horse trainer and I've arranged some well-priced private lessons with him. My question is, what should I expect for my first time on a horse, and what should I be aware of. Also, which clothes do I need to wear? I know a helmet, boots, and gloves are essentials. Do I absoloutly have to wear breeches? Please no silly or serious answers. 10 points for most thoughough and informativive answer. Oh, and if you actually ride horses, that would be great! Thanks Ellie I'm doing English Style Riding, not western. All you people have great answers so far! Thanks for all the help you've given me! It will be hard to choose the best answer though.
Im writing a book about zombies, so whats the largest breed of horse? Im pretty sure its the Clydesdale, but I need to be certain. Also, whats the gyst of ferrying (or however its spelt)? I know you trim the hooves every six weeks, but is there more? Im not thinking of getting a horse, so dont go 'oh, this horse isnt for beginners, and dont think about ferrying your own horse, you should see a professional', Im writing a book about zombie infestation and the people find a farm and find a couple of whatever the largest horse is and decide to use them. Also, a general description of the horse would be nice, like average hands tall/long and average weight Thanks
What is the average height of horse jockeys? and what kind of job do they find working when their professional horse racing career ends?
Can i teach myself how to ride a horse successfully without a professional horseback riding instructor? I live up north and i dont really have very many opportunities for riding, but have just been given permission to use my neighbours horse. I have had maybe two weeks of riding instruction in my life and I'm 18 years old. So i'm planning on going there every afternoon after work to ride, and try to improve my skills, does anyone know good books or some type of system that i could use to teach myself to be a good rider? I dont want to form bad habits and a bad style of riding, but there really isnt anyone who can teach me to ride properly, and i dont have the money to hire an instructor to come out there and assist me. Any helpful information would be really really appreciated! Thanks alot everyone! Awesome, you guys are so quick to answer!. Thanks for all the tips, and I am going to try and get someone to come out and give me pointers and such, it just might take a while...thanks again for your input..
What is the best way to ship your horse cross country? I have a rather large horse just at 18.1 hands, usually I take the horses in my trailer but I just don't think that this mare would be comfy, should I ship them in a box stall or just let the professional hauler advise or do you have any suggestions about who to use as a professional hauler that ships throughout the USA?
Can I break my horse by riding her everyday? I don't have any professional training but I can get on my horse and ride her in a roundpen, I just need to work on er flexion more. Can I break her myself? How do the old cowboys do it?
Selling a horse and dealing with potential buyers? I have been trying to seel my appendix gelding for a while now, and have had no luck. The economy in my area is literally among the worst in the country, and no one is buying horses. I can not sell my horse, he is priced to be a total steal, I have had hardly anyone out to look at him. The only buyers I have had out don't take me seriously. I am in my mid twenties, but look younger, I have had sellers even ask to speak with my parents about my horse. One lady asked to speak with my mother, and I tried to explain that my parents have nothing to do with my horses, as the horse is owned by me not them, she didn't believe me. I present myself in a mature and professional manner. I have had horses my entire life, I grew up on a training/boarding farm, I have national titles in showing, yet I still get spoken to like I am an idiot by the older people that come to try my horse. I am so frustrated, I just want my current one gone so I don't have to deal with more condescending buyers. This is the ad I have written for my gelding: (his full name here) "Berry" is a 2003 gorgeous true 16.1 hand bay appendix gelding. He is well started in huntseat, and has lots of potential for western as well. Berry has loads of potential in the showring, with a few months of consistant work he will be ready to win at open shows, 4-H, and will also be very competitive AQHA novice youth and novice amature. He is very athletic, a beautiful mover, and as sweet as they come. Berry was imprinted at birth so he is beyond quiet and calm, he would be a great confidence builder for a timid rider. Berry is 100% sane, sound, and healthy. My horse is everything written above, and then some. He is literally an amazing horse, would be fabulous for a youth once he has a bit more training, but I cant even get people out to look at him. How can I get sellers to notice my horse? He is priced at 6,000 dollars, which is a steal for this horse. Any suggestions to improve my ad and sell my horse quicker? And how do I handle sellers that waste my time, and are flat out rude to me? I have my horse advertised on equine.com, and dreamhorse.com with photos. What other sites are actually worth the cost it requires to put up a photo? Are the spotlight ads on dreamhorse.com worth the price? I am not in 4-H, as I am in my mid-twenties... and my parents live 2 hours away from my horse, so no, i really don't need them by my side... thanks though? I do carry my self in a very professional way, I work as a paralegal, I am mature and don't gush about my horse, honestly I like my horse and all, but I don't view or treat him as a pet... And his price is because he is unfinshed, but is a fancy horse... His full brother who was almost identicle to him just sold for 15,000 and was not proven yet (just had more training). **I deleted the ads because the photo expired, and I wanted to wait a little bit, work on training him some more, get new pics and start over fresh with advertising.
How much would you sell a dressage horse for? My mother recently sold my dressage horse partner of 5 years. He was a Belgian Warmblood gelding trained to third level and ready to move to fourth. His father was Fraval, a very prominent sire. He was 17.1 and was a beautiful mover, top level quality for sure!! Years of professional training and was 9 years old. TOP LEVEL PROSPECT!
How does one go about becoming a professional showing rider? I mean, I don't really expect to be a professional rider, but I was just curious. I am not actually all that interested in becoming professional show-rider... I like working with trouble horses rather than just using amazing horses to make me look pretty. :) But how would you do it?
What kind of digital camera for horse photos? I'd like to get some better photos of my horses, who seem to be constantly in motion. The 2 digital cameras I have seem to have quite a delay on them and by the time the picture is taken they have moved again. Also, the movement photos are often blury, even when set on the action setting. I don't want to spend a fortune. I'm not a professional and my extra funds go to the horses. ALSO, why the heck do the suckers eat through batteries so fast? Honestly, if I want to use the camera for 20 minutes I need to replace the batteries in the begining and the end. Why? And the alkalai batteries last NO longer than the regular ones. Thanks much in advance! I'm sorry, I must not have made it clear. I would like a new camera. I'm just wondering what type to get and I don't want to spend $500 on one.
If one were to want to buy a horse, how would he go about it? who would he contact? how would he find a seller I want to know how the buying and selling of horses occurs. Specifically in two circumstances: 1. between and breeder and a non-professional horse seeker 2. between two professional breeders. How do these people find each other????
Should Horse Racing have a national commissioner like in baseball, football, hockey, etc. ? Every sport has a national office of the commissioner except boxing and horse racing, which are run by individual states. Penalties are sometimes honored and sometimes penalties against fighters and jockey's are ignored from state to state, medications and nutritional substances are disputed from state to state, etc. Would a national commissioners office solve or hinder horse racing and professional boxing ?
How do you get rid of large amounts of horse manure without paying a lot of money? We live on 2.5 acres with 2 horses. We've been dumping manure mixed with wood shavings into a pile when we clean the stalls. That pile is now gigantic and growing. We put an ad in the paper for free manure, in case people want to come take it for fertilizer, but people aren't exactly racing over for it. Any ideas? We're trying to avoid paying a professional removal service.
How do you train a horse to do dressage? I am learning how to train horses and break them and everything and I thought it would be kind of cool to teach dressage. I don't have a lot of money for lessons in that kind of training but I was wondering if there was a website that would tell or if there was a dvd or book that had a professional trainer who would explain step by step like Clinton Anderson. Thanks. I would like to learn to teach piaffe
What are the best horse boots for barrel racing? what are the best protective boots for barrel racing, splint, skid, and bell. cause there are so many to choose from and my horse has to have them cause he slips quite often and rips his shoes off and i think if he doesnt have his boots on he would hurt himself badly. but the boots i have on him now are getting in bad shape and i need something that will hold up, and i cant choose from the... classic equine legacy professionals choice SMB boots ortho boots or any others i didnt mention

i have a horse that will be bred on wed, for the first time, any tips????? My mare will be bred this week to a stallion who has only been bred once before and my mare has never been bred before. She is 3 years old, and i dont think she would kick or seriously injure the stallion, but there will be a professional horse breeder present to help out. I get paid to take photos of people, horses, homes, etc. Am I considered professional because I get paid? I've had no formal training but with the encouragement from my co-workers I started a small photography business on the side. The definition of the word, "professional" has changed over the years and seems to mean different things to different people. What determines a professional?? Wikipedia basically states that you can receive payment and still be an amateur. When would I be considered a pro'? After I've completed some courses? If so, how many would I need to take or is it just skill that counts? I remember this term caused some problem with Olympic skaters several years ago.... My other job is not connected with photography, so I'm not a free lance photographer. Thanks for bringing that up though. Dr. Sam - love your answer even tho' technically it may not be the best one!
Clothes to wear for a horse show? I'm a 4-H member and just getting started in horses. I'm going to be in a western pleasure and halter class this fall and I have no idea what to wear. I don't like the gaudy, rhinestone encrusted outfits that I've seen so far. I want to wear more subdued colors, black preferred. I think blazers over a mock turtle neck look very professional, but would it look ridiculous on a teen girl? I don't want to spend more than $100. I'll also need a hat to go with it, but I'll already have brown and black boots. The shows will be in a small county fair in Ohio. Can anyone give me links or stores in Ohio?
Is it true, a doctor has a right to sit on their "high-horse"? I work in a "professional" medical establishment. For some odd reason doctors are self-branding themselves with the idea that those around them, not on a doctor status, should be treated as a peon. The last time I checked, what gave them that status was a piece of paper called a medical license, which can be revoked. I understand what sacrifises they may have made to fullfill their accomplishments, but does it give them a right to remain on their "high-horse?" They're human like the rest of us, and they should be treated as such. Should I make it my business to remind them that regardless of their achievements, what they do in life will not guarantee them a better seat to Heaven than the next person?
what should i wear for horse back riding? It is for enduance riding, 50 mile, normally during lessons i wear a tucked in shirt and jeans, w/ a helmet and my hair pulled back. How to become a professional show jumper? where do you have to start? I am an advanced rider and was just curious about how you would go about doing this? I was also wondering what you have to do and/or where you have to go to become a certified horse-bac riding instructor. Thank you!
How much does it cost to build a horse stable/arena? I already have enough land to build one...I just need to know how much it would cost to have professional carpentars build one.

Do u know anything about horse race betting on the internet? I have a friend who wants to become a professional gambler. He thinks if you find the right mathematical strategy you can make money without risking a lot. What do u think?

Professional Training? Hi, I was wondering what are peoples thoughts on professional horse training. Like sending them to the trainers for 30, or 60 days. I want to send my mare but I don't if it will help and I'll miss her like crazy!! Thanks
Does anyone know a professional mule trainer I can send my mule to be trained? I have a two year old mule that I need to get trained other wise I'm going to sell him to whoever will take him. I have tried to work with him but he's too smart for me. I have trained lots of horses but mules are a different creature all together. I need to find someone to train him to ride, drive and pack. Any help will be appreciated.
Help with drawing horse legs? I've been doodling horses lately, and I've pretty much gotten the bodies and heads down, but I can't figure out how to position the legs correctly. I've heard that horse legs and feet are some of the hardest things to draw, so I was hoping for some kind of guide to help me find the basic shapes to work with. I looked online for a few, but they all showed the horse just as lines, then magically bulked out to have curves in all the right places, which is a bit too complicated. I'm not a professional artist or anything, just curious. Can anyone help me out? Either links or tips are appreciated. Thanks.
Has anyone here ever been thrown off a horse or know someone who has, and if so? What were the circumstances, were you (or someone you know) injured and did your experience (or that of someone you know) change your (or their) attitude about horses, and do you (or they) still ride? Please do not include stories of professionals such as jockeys or rodeo people, but your own personal stories. Thanks. I was on a family trip to the mountains when I was 15 when an Arabian thought a piece of barbwire was a snake; half of my family was thrown off our horses and the horses ran away - I narrowly escaped becoming paralyzed - I hit the ground about one inch from an outcropping of granite. It took us all afternoon to find them - we had to walk miles through a mosquito-infested marsh. A year later my mother was thrown off and had a compression fracture of a vertebra (they thought it was a stroke at first). She could not walk for a year and I wound up having to wash her feet as she could not bend to reach them during that time. I have never been on a horse since as I cannot trust a horse with my life. My brother was "brushed" against a tree by a Shetland pony (the saddle went upside down and he was dragged like that for about 100 yards) and he feels the same. But yet I still love to watch the races. IF you are a professional in the business you COULD tell me your story. I just meant I didn't want outsiders to tell about jockey spills, etc. I wish to thank all of you equestrians for your excellent answers. However, the thoroughness of a lot of them has made it impossible for me to select a Best Answerer. I am, therefore, turning that over to, you, my comrades. Thanks again!
what can i do to become a photographer? a professional one? i was loking at some pictures of horses the other day, and it made me realise how much i love to take pictures. what do i have to do to become a photographer?
What do You think of my horse racing speech? Two years ago in May 2005, Barbaro, a 3 year old Thoroughbred racehorse won the Kentucky Derby. Two weeks later he shattered his leg in the Preakness race. The next day he underwent surgery for his injuries . In July 2005, he developed laminitis in his left rear leg , a very painful disease in the hoof caused by a failure of the hoof bone to connect to the hoof wall. He had an additional five surgeries, and his prognosis varied as he remained for an extraordinarily long period of time in the equine Intensive Care Unit at the University of Pennsylvania. While his right leg eventually healed, a final risky surgery on it proved futile because the colt soon developed further laminitis in both front legs. His veterinarians and owners then concluded that he could not be saved, and Barbaro was euthanized on January 29, 2007. Barbaro broke his right hind leg in more than 20 places: a broken cannon bone above the ankle, a broken sesamoid bone behind the ankle and a broken long pastern bone below the ankle. The fetlock joint was dislocated. If Barbaro had not ridden in that race, he might still be alive today. The Dangers and evils of horse racing I’m going to present to you the dangers and evils of professional horse racing. Every year hundreds of race horses are raced to death, and many more are injured. If they aren’t winning, then they are frequently neglected and abused. Something needs to be done to stop the abuse and help these horses. Injuries There are many dangers in horse racing. A horse can slip and fall, or step on its leg wrong and break it. Another famous racehorse, Ruffian, the unbeatable thoroughbred filly was running in a match race against the Kentucky Derby winner Foolish Pleasure. Half way through the race she stepped wrong and completely snapped her leg. She had a successful surgery, but when she woke up from it she accidentally broke her other leg. She was put down eight hours after the accident. In the 2005 racing year, 320 racehorse deaths were reported in California alone, a number believed to be an all-time high. It was a 32 percent increase from the previous year, with 154 of the deaths coming during races, up 34 percent from the previous year. And horse racing doesn’t just take a toll on the horses. Surprisingly, horse racing is the most dangerous sport for people. For every 100,000 fatalities nationwide, about 128 are caused by horse racing. Animal Aid, a British animal rights organization. Founded in 1977, Initiated a Race Horse Death Watch was launched during the 2007 Cheltenham Festival in England. Its purpose is to expose and record every on-course Thoroughbred fatality in Britain. Their research indicated that an average of 375 horses is raced to death every year. One-third of them die on racecourses, while the others are destroyed as a result of training injuries, or are killed because they are no longer commercially viable. From Winner to Dinner In 2002 the Kentucky Derby 1986 Winner Ferdinand was slaughtered in a Japanese slaughter house. Though Americans were outraged, not much was done to stop slaughter until 2006 when an Anti Slaughter bill was put into the senate. The bill passed but it only protects horses going to slaughter in America. It does not protect horses being shipped out of the country and into Mexico and Canada. More than 90% of horses going to Slaughter are healthy horses, and nearly half of those horses are racehorses. In slaughter houses the horses are neglected, abused and poorly fed, if fed at all. They are given just enough nourishment to keep them alive until they can be slaughtered. Overworking Overworking is another danger. Many good horses are ruined because they are raced too much when they are still too young. The official thoroughbred birthday is January 1st when they can officially start racing, so none of the horses are actually a year old. Some are younger than others, thus a 5 months old horse could be racing an 8 month old horse. Since the horses are raced when they are so young and still growing, it causes bone problems. They can develop Arthritis at early ages. The bones can chip and create bumps on their legs, and their joints are often ruined resulting in lifetime lameness. Being raced or trained every day is very hard on a horse, especially a young, growing horse. If trained at the right age (3 or 4) a Thoroughbred can be raced up to the age of 10. But in America, the average retiring age is 4 or 5. No place to call home Many people think that racehorses ‘live the good life’. They get nice grain and fresh hay every day. They live in heated barns and have nice comfortable stalls with grooms that go in and clean up for them every 5 minutes. The problem is that they are not living as horses should, they live in a box stall, are expected to be explosively athletic at the drop of a hat, are given a bit of a cool out, and put back in their stalls. They are fed well, but are often handled by people who don't care who they are as an animal but rather how they translate into a paycheck, or who don't have the time to work with them individually because they have a whole barn of 20 horses to care for. A horse needs play time; time to just be a horse. It needs time in a pasture to run around and release pent up energy. These racehorses are so expensive that they can’t be let outside for fear of being hurt. They have no real place to call home. These Racehorses are still just horses. They still need interaction with other horses. The jockeys that ride them see them as a money maker, and they don’t actually ride the horse until the race. They have different riders all through training. Think about it Horse Racing is seen as a prestigious sport. Millions of spectators flock to the races, bet on a horse they think looks fast, and sit and cheer that horse on. Yet few ever consider the well being of the horse. They must run at top speed anywhere from a quarter mile to three miles. If they don’t win they are cooled off quickly and put back in their stall while their owners go on to race the next horse in the stock. If they do win they are taken right to the winners circle. An odd spooky blanket of flowers is thrown onto their back and lights start flashing from cameras and they are paraded off to their stall with a crowd of people following. Next time you go to a horse race or even see it on TV, think about the horses. I hope this speech has prompted you to look at it differently. Thank you. honestly, thank you very much, but I spent WEEKS researching that. I know what happens. What happened to Barbaro wasnt a freak accident. It happens to race horses every year. I myself ride at a top class jumper barn. The horses there are treated just as well as racehorses and they arent breaking legs every year. They get time to rest and they are put out to pasture when they are tired. So plz, dont tell me i dont know wat im talking about.
Anyone know of a Professional Petsitter in California? Some people I know that live in visalia, California have 5 dogs, 4 cats, a lot of birds, lamas, horses, chickens, and roosters as pets and they can't go out to visit someone because something could happen to them and someone visiting does something wrong and kill them. CAn anyone recommend a good petsitter that is able to watch over the animals? Anything would be great.
